Options for jetsetting journeys

Sleep pointers for adventurers

Sometimes sleep isn’t even an issue when adventuring. Usually I am exhausted after a long day on the slopes or trails. But when getting some shuteye seems impossible, there are options. My favorites include lifestyle and nutrition changes, supplementation, and a few favorite products.

Avoid blue light

There’s a good chance you’ve heard this reminder over and over, but screens are not your friend when it comes to sleep. Enjoy your adventure: Say no to work emails, and explore your surroundings instead of binge-watching TV. But if you’re still not quite ready for sleep after that, protect your eyes (and nervous system) from blue light with blue light blocking glasses. I was pretty impressed with the fit and functionality of GUNNAR Intercept glasses, and the crystal frames make the glasses seem almost imperceptible.

Eat right…and supplement

Many aren’t eating enough magnesium-rich foods–dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds, beans, fish, and/or whole grains. And there can be problems with absorption and retention. Given that this nutrient is key to muscle relaxation and can create sedative effects, that’s a problem. Magnesium biglycinate is a good source to help with both. Precision Nutrition, a noted nutrition certification company, recommends 200-400 mg daily in the afternoon or evening, and 1-2 scoops will get you there.

Block all light

My Manta sleep mask is hands-down one of my favorite sleep hacks. It’s comfortable, washable, and most-importantly, light-blocking. It’s their basic offering, but there are more options with different features to boost your sleep time.

Beyond my mask, I love blackout shades. Not only do they help with sleep, but they keep the house cooler on scorcher days. Just make sure that dimensions are correct, as even small gaps can make a big difference.

What else helps you sleep when you’re on the road?
